What You Need To Know About Chain Hoist Rental And Safety

If you are considering chain hoist rental then you probably have a project that is going to require some heavy lifting. Using a chain hoist, as opposed to a rope hoist, is a perfect option for lifting those bigger loads. Unfortunately these hoists can be dangerous is not used correctly so getting to know a bit more about the hoists before you start the project is always an important safety consideration.

Types of Chain Hoists

When you call in to schedule a chain hoist rental you may be asked what type of chain hoist you need. There are three different options and they include a lever ratchet, a hand chain and a differential chain hoist.

A lever ratchet style is often a smaller chain hoist but there are also larger industrial models that can be used for up to 5 tons. This type of chain hoist uses a brake/clutch system that allows you to use a level in a sprocket to lift the load and a lower by releasing the brake.

Hand chain hoists are the most common and are actually very similar to the lever ratchet style in that there is a brake system and a planetary gearing that allows the load to lift and lock into place. By pulling the chain downwards the brake is released and the load is moved down. These hoists can hold up to 10 tons or more, usually the heavier ones offer a compound pull feature.

Differential hoists have two chain wheels and a continuous loop of chain that becomes larger or smaller depending on the direction of pull on the chain. This creates the lifting and lowering action and is a simple chain hoist rental for both large and small projects.

Safety Issues

When booking your chain hoist rental be sure to provide specific information about the weight of the load you are planning on lifting and lowering. Using a chain hoist rental that is not rated for your load weight is extremely unsafe and can results in damage to the load as well as injury if the load falls.

In addition to just using the right size of chain hoist rental, it is also important to verify that the load can be handled by the support that you are using for the hoist. This is not as much of a problem for a trolley style but for a hanging chain hoist make sure the support is durable and can handle the total weight including any additional stress if the load is to be moved using the hoist.
