Whether you are just starting out or have been working for twenty years it is never too late to try to find a career that will make you happy. Finding the right career is never easy. In fact when you consider most of us had to decide what we wanted to do as teenagers it seems a miracle that so many of us carry on down that same path throughout our lives. There are three questions you should ask yourself right now in order to find out what career is right for you:
1. What are your passions?
A Certified Professional Coach may very well ask this same question if you tell them you are unhappy in your current career. So many of us look for a job or career either based on what is available (settling) or out of want for more money (finances) yet rarely consider what makes us passionate. Passion can be found in many areas from a hobby such as cooking or fishing or from a talent you have always had but were never able to develop. It can even be a passion for learning, for people or for helping others. Making a list of your passions is a great first start to find what careers will make you happy.
2. What are my talents?
Next make a list of what you consider to be talents or even talents on which you have been complimented throughout your life. It could be a trait such as a quick wit, a skill such as drawing or taking things apart and putting them back together, being a good listener or being able to solve problems. Often the skills we have the things we are good at are also the things we love doing.
3. What can I teach?
There is a saying that those who can do and those who can’t teach. However this is not necessarily true. Think about all of the things you know be it experience acquired during your career, your education or your talents and make a list of things you think you could share and teach to others. These are the areas you can easily improve upon with further training, or likewise decide to teach or share in self made courses, online or in a business.
Chances are you will see cross-overs in your answers. These are the areas in which you should consider starting a business, returning to school to enhance your skills or even consider becoming a certified professional coach or teacher.
