One of the things people take for granted is the ability to have a cell phone. Even more important today, a smartphone becomes an essential tool for managing everything from email to staying in touch with doctors through apps and websites.
Many low-income individuals and families struggle with trying to find a traditional cell phone and plan that is affordable. Thanks to the Lifeline Program, these families and individuals can now apply for a free government smartphone and Lifeline phone service in Oklahoma.
How It Works
Specific approved telecommunication providers are approved to offer Lifeline phone services in Oklahoma. Some of the larger Lifeline Program providers offer the program in multiple states, using the same services and towers, but as a consumer, you need to apply within your specific state to be eligible. You can find all of the Oklahoma specific information on the Lifeline Program providers’ website.
First, you need to know if you’re eligible to apply because it would be a waste of time to apply if you know that you don’t meet the minimum requirements for the Lifeline phone service. Some of the eligibility criteria, includes an income level of 135% of the federal poverty guidelines or participating in another government program. These additional programs include Medicaid, SSI, SNAP, federal housing assistance, Veteran’s and Survivor’s pension, and similar programs. Those qualifying for programs for tribal lands also qualify for the Lifeline Program.
What to Expect
Using the government cell phone and plan offers new models of smartphones and all the features you expect. This includes the ability to make domestic calls, texts, send messages, connect on social media, surf the web, and download apps.
Most providers also provide low-cost options to add features to the basic Lifeline plan. These features can be customized just as they are for other users.
