The basics of a wired home network

A user can buy cables online which can be used to set up a wired home network. The network, once wired, will allow multiple computers to interface and “talk” to one another. One can buy cables online as well as the other equipment that is required to complete the installation. Once the installation has been completed the networked computers can now share files between them and all the computers on the network can share a common printer, scanner or other external device. With a networked system, every computer can share a common internet connection and the system allows users to play interactive games.

The minimum number of computers needed for a home network is two. The computers, often more than two are hooked together using special cables that act as the umbilical cord, connecting computers and peripherals together. As well as the physical linking of computers, special software is needed to manage data transfer and the sharing of files. Depending on the computer operating system, networking software is often included.

To complete the installation you must do more than buy cables online and connect the computers, the system requires a router. A router is a computer device that allows for connection sharing, and file sharing between computers. It does not matter if the network is connected to the internet or not, a router is required. If the network is connected to the internet it requires the addition of a modem. Through the cable system the router allows all computers access to the internet via the modem.

In recent years more and more people have been setting up a wireless home network. Whereas a wired network transfers data via cables, a wireless network transfers data via radio waves. The installation of a wireless network is simple and quick and many people are opting for it.

Although a wireless network has certain advantages, wired networks are still thought to be superior because they are more secure and far better protected from data theft or hacking. Not only are they more secure, they also run faster which means that large data dumps can be accomplished in a far shorter time.

The disadvantages of a wired network are lack of flexibility and installation expenses. Wired computers cannot be easily moved unless they are relocated to an existing or new wired connection.
