Having a pet is a wonderful and rewarding experience. As their family members, we want them to live a long, happy and healthy life. So what are the basic needs to consider when adopting a new furry family member? Here are several things to consider.
Grooming
Pet grooming is not just for looks or cuteness, it is essential for your animal’s health. Some dogs require far more grooming upkeep then others and it is an important cost to consider when searching for the right pet. Breeds such as yorkies, poodles and maltese dogs (just to name a few) will require regular trips to the groomer. Some types of fur are more prone to matting, especially if they are not brushed regularly. Matts in the fur can lead to skin infections underneath the clumping and may cause discomfort from pulling on the skin. Dogs also need to have their nails trimmed on a regular basis. If they are left to grow unchecked, they will cause discomfort when walking, are more prone to breaking, and can even grow into the dog’s pad which is extremely painful. Most cats do not require professional grooming, but there are some breeds that may need an occasional day at the spa.
Exercise
All animals need exercise for their general well being. The extent of exercise is largely dependent on the age and breed of the animal. Working breeds were “bred to work” these dogs need a higher level of exercise and enrichment then others. Providing your dog with the appropriate level of exercise is the number one thing you can do to prevent destructive behaviors.
Nutrition
Proper nutrition to maintain health cannot be overstated. Think of how significantly our own dietary habits affect our health. Not all foods are appropriate for every animal. For example: large, dry kibbles maybe the perfect choice for your lab that seems constantly hungry, whereas this would be a poor choice for your senior poodle with sensitive teeth.
Routine Health Exams
Since dogs and cats have a lifespan that is just a fraction of ours, they require more frequent health exams to detect disease early and maintain health and wellness. Each pet is unique and will therefore have different needs. The frequency of visits should be discussed with your veterinarian.
