When it comes to children, from infants to those on the threshold of puberty, it pays to be attentive to what your children wear. While it may be fine to dress your infants in onesies and twosies sporting Islamic sayings, this may not be appreciated by all Muslims. While the basic clothing of all children is similar, however, Islamic clothing for kids is not always simple to decide upon nor easy to implement.
Essentially, children want to run and play. They attend school when of age. They want to be just like everyone else. This may preclude them wanting to wear traditional garb. While it is important to teach them the values honored and promoted in the Qoarn and by the Prophet, it is not always easy to have them wear the proper attire. If the children play with others of different faiths and/or attend school with them, it complicates matters. Children have difficulty being openly “different” from others of the same age.
Parents Role
Parents play an important role in ensuring their children grow up to be respectable Muslims. This role extends to their selection of appropriate Muslim clothing for kids. Yet, whether they should enforce the wearing of the traditional clothing at an early age is debatable. On special occasions and for important or significant events, Islamic clothing is appropriate. However, for everyday wear, it tends up being a personal parental choice.
Some families do not kid around. They institute traditional or contemporary Islamic clothing and fashion for kids at an early age. Others prefer to wait until puberty sets in before they clamp down on what their children should wear. It is a personal dilemma. Only the parent is fully qualified to decide what is best for his or her own child.
Islamic Clothing for Kids: Girls
A young girl may not wear a hijab until she reaches puberty, but she is expected to conform in dress. Islamic clothing for girls involves covering of the body. She must wear clothing that mimics that of a grown woman. Young girls are expected to replace any idea of wearing wear shorts, short skirts, belly shirts, or sleeveless tops in with lengthy skirts and long sleeved shirts or blouses.
Islamic Clothing for Kids: Boys
Young boys adopt the adult male attire. They are not to wear shorts or reveal bare skin. Like their female counterpart, boys are to present a modest appearance to the world. Hands, of course and feet remain free to do what kids do best – play.
Islamic clothing for kids is stated to be similar to that worn by adults. Yet, it is up to the parents to decide whether their children will adopt the traditional style of Muslim attire. Only they can determine what their children where, and when they will to wear it.
