How to take care of your Lace Curtains

by | May 24, 2013 | Carpets and Rugs

These are some of the most attractive curtains you can buy. The patterns are intricate and pleasing to the eye. They tend to establish the feeling of elegance in any room you hang them in. However, they get soiled and dirty just like anything you hang in front of a window as they filter the dust and particulate matter out of the air that passes through them. As they become soiled, they lose the appeal they had when you first put them up. But, never fear, they are maintainable and restorable to their original shape and beauty if you just follow these simple tips for cleaning lace curtains.
Tips for Curtains Cleaning in London

Lace panels come in many styles and types but they all have similar characteristics in that they are made primarily from cotton. As such, these curtains are able to be cleaned using your clothes washer albeit on the delicate cycle so you don’t spin the shape right out of them. Dryers are a no-no. Nottingham and Madras Scottish lace panels are probably the most restrictive of the styles and types of lace curtains so we’ll focus on getting those clean:
1. Set the washing machine water selection to cold/cold for the wash and rinse cycles
2. Set the other knob to the delicate cycle which in essence will give you a short wash cycle with minimal spinning.
3. If you have fear and trepidation that the machine is going to destroy your lace panels, you can choose to wash these by hand in either the deep sink or in the bathtub. Just remember to use the same water selection; cold/cold
4. Buy yourself a mild detergent. That means don’t use the same stuff you washed the kids blue jeans with last night.
5. DO NOT use bleach.
6. Wash until all the dirt and stains are gone and then rinse thoroughly until all traces of the detergent are gone.
7. DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DRYER
8. The curtains may still be quite damp after being washed. You can remove excess water by getting some clean white towels and pat them dry as they lay on a clean flat surface.
9. Letting them dry naturally in the open air is the best alternative. Just put them back in place if that’s an option. Their own weight will prevent wrinkles and they’ll look great.
10. Other alternatives can be used. Just make sure the method you use has a strong, rigid support as Nottingham and Madras lace do not do well if the support sags as it disfigure the panel shape making it necessary to iron it to restore its shape.
11. Don’t forget that lace panels are natural cotton fibre and as such susceptible to shrinkage. Ironing them may restore some length but maybe not. You might have to lower the curtain rod to account for the shrinkage so the panels still reach the bottom of the window.
Follow these simple tips and your lace curtains will be elegant and beautiful for years to come.
