How to Stay Safe at University of Oklahoma Off-Campus Housing

by | Sep 13, 2022 | Student Housing Center

Living off campus gives students more freedom and responsibility but also challenges them. Many parents fear their children living in University of Oklahoma off-campus housing, but living in student apartments is relatively safe. Students only need to follow these tips to stay safe.

Lock the Apartment Doors

Most students know to lock their doors when they leave their apartments, but what about when they return? Surprisingly, this seems to be an issue. Students need to remember to lock their doors even when they’re home.

Don’t Let Strangers into The Building

Some apartment buildings have interior entrances, which require students to have a key fob or code to enter the building. These security measures are in place to keep everyone in the building safe. Although it’s tempting to let someone in who says they’re visiting another resident, it’s best to advise that individual to contact their friend to let them in. It keeps everyone safe.

Use the Buddy System

Student housing is usually near campus, making walking to and from class or on-campus activities easy. Walking with a buddy is always the safest option because there’s protection in numbers. If someone isn’t available to walk with, consider driving to campus or using a shuttle service. Many student apartments have shuttles to take students to the campus and even surrounding businesses.

Report Suspicious Behavior

So often, people ignore their first instincts, especially younger adults. If something seems suspicious, don’t be afraid to report it to the police or the building’s security team.
