Difficulties Job Searching in the Current Economic Climate

by | Mar 21, 2013 | Careers And Jobs

Unemployment figures in the UK have reached three million over the past 12 months, and the government is pushing for the unemployed to take whatever jobs they can find – those without employment are viewed as ‘work-shy’. But with the current state of the economy, and around 52 applicants for every graduate job (on average), it is really that easy for job seekers to find employment?

16 Year High

Unemployment is at its highest levels in the UK for 16 years, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. With more than one in five 16-24 year olds out of work and actively seeking a job, what are the government actually doing to help people find work? It seems they’re acting on a controversial mixture of nudges and bribes by cutting benefits to those most in need. In fact, David Cameron seems to find the whole issue of unemployment an annoyance, and has created around 5,000 jobs to this end, most of which are so poorly paid that taxpayers will be forced to cough up money to top up these salaries with tax credits.

Unpaid Work

Many of the bright young graduates leaving university today and looking for Career Employment Bath are forced into unpaid internships in the hopes of gaining the experience they need to be offered a full time, paid role. These internships are often full-time and can last anywhere from 6 – 12 months – but how is the average young person supposed to support themselves during this time? The only way is by parental assistance or working evenings and nights in a bar or supermarket, leading to a round-the-clock existence which is neither healthy nor benefitting their concentration levels during the day.

Capping Benefits

With David Cameron’s proposal to cap benefits at £26,000 in the UK, many people living in big cities struggle to afford to go back to work, caught in an endless cycle of housing benefit and job seekers allowance claims. Returning to work means their housing benefit drops, which then means the individual may not be able to afford their rent. So what’s the solution? The government seems to think that unpaid apprenticeships and workshops assisting people to write better CV’s will solve the current unemployment crisis in the UK.

Jobs are Hard to Find

Those looking for Career Employment Bath may find that vacancies are either hard to come by or have so many applicants that making it to interview stage is a lottery. By registering with a local recruitment agency with specialist knowledge of their sector, job seekers can greatly increase their chances of finding work. Instead of focusing on how the jobseekers are simply not searching hard enough for jobs, perhaps the government should look at why there is such a shortage of available vacancies, and take steps to address this – such as providing investment grants to smaller companies in the music or computer games industries in return for taking on apprentices and interns!

Unemployment levels are rising and look set to continue to do so, unless the government takes drastic steps to address this. Hunting for a job has never been more difficult, but by registering with a reputable recruitment agency, you can improve your chances of finding your dream role.
